"

"One Hundred Thousand Welcomes!" or " Cead Mile Failte ", as some of the local Scots like to say, to#751 Bras D'or Scenic Drive. Our property is almost 3 acres in size and is in the friendly welcoming community of Little Narrows, which is in the heart of one of the most beautiful islands on our planet, Cape Breton Island. This property is an ideal retirement and/or income property uniquely situated on the beautiful Bras D'or Lakes. Unique because it has waterfrontage bothto the front and rear of the property. Our home faces a spectacular view of the water with the Cape Breton Highlands in the background. The view will inspire you andwill cause you to pause and soak in its beauty. The sunsets can be breathtaking.

Nature is everywhere you walk, look and listen. The bald eagles, osprey, Canada geese and loons are everyday sightings. Sometimes they fly close enough above youto feel the breeze from their wings. The plantings on the property attract many different song birds which return every year along with the hummingbirds. Wild hare, rabbit, white tail deer, red fox, otter, minkand beaver are frequent visitors toour land and water.

The Bras D'Or Lakes are the largest salt water lakes in the world. The Lakes are ideal for swimming. canoeing, kayaking, sailing, boating, and fishing. The area around our lake, Whycogomagh Bay, is not developed, nor is it densely populated. It is still very much in its natural state, so much so that days can go by without seeing a single boat on the water. Winter activities such as skiing, skating, ice fishing and snowmobiling are right outside your door.

Our home is an owner built(1992) 1128 sq. ft. one and a half story cottage with skylights in the living and bedroom areas. The skylights at night provide a chance to view the heavens, to see shooting stars, to watch the International Space Station go by, and if you're really lucky, the Northern Lights flashing their brilliant colors. The exterior of the cottage is done with natural red cedar shingles which have weatheredto a beautiful patina that blends in withits natural surroundings. The interior of the cottage is done in a warm and welcoming country decor. There are two bedrooms, one and one half baths, mudroom, laundry room, living room, den(possible 3rd. bedroom), and kitchen with built-in appliances. The home is surrounded by a spacious deck with a pergola over the kitchen bay window. Near the home are several outbuildings. One is a finished garage with a fully equipped woodworking shop, wine cellar, and an upstairs storage loft which has the potential of becoming a guest apartment. The other buildings are a shed and a small garage for the John Deere lawn tractor. The home has a municipal water supply with a well and submersible pump for backup if need be. The septic system is very efficient and eco friendly. Our location is peaceful and quiet with no pollution of any kind, including noise or visual pollution.

The almost 3 acres of land is a 28 year labor of love. Mature maple, white birch, oak, and red ash trees surround the front half of the home giving it privacy and shade in the hot summer sun. The back half of the home is surrounded by a garden pond, flowering shrubs, trees, and perennials. A raised kitchen garden provides an abundance of fresh vegetables and herbs. About 1 1/2 acres of the property has been carefully designed and cultivated into a small but very productive hobby farm. The lower field is currently planted with raspberries which are u-picked every year by the friendliest people in the world. The upper field has a 150 vine vineyard with red wine grapes, white wine grapes and delicious table grapes. There are also plantings of blueberries, blackberries, Saskatoon berries, currants, crab apples, and espalier apple trees. Between the upper and lower field is an large irrigation pond which can irrigate either field with the flick of a switch.

The property also comes with a craft business besides the u-pick. The owners currently produce and sell a highly profitable and unique product, a gourmet wine jelly, made from our own berries. The product is easy to make and is distributed to gift and craft stores on the island. The product has great potential for future market expansion if desired. The property was originally two separate building lots and can easily be subdivided again if desired. The property could accommodate several rental cottages also if one didn’t want the hobby farm. The water frontage in both the front and rear could also be developed for canoe and kayak rentals if desired. Adjacent to the property is approximately 75 acres of wooded waterfront property for sale.

We are minutes away from churches, schools, and country stores. The town of Baddeck, which is only 25 minutes away, has shopping, restaurants, and a golf course.

Our price includes everything except personal items and it is negotiable according to your wants and needs.

SYDNEY — A major travel publication has recognized Cape Breton Island as a world-class vacation destination.
Travel + Leisure magazine named Cape Breton the best island to visit in the continental United States and Canada in the 2008 World’s Best Awards readers’ survey. The ranking was released July 9.
“Travel + Leisure magazine is very prestigious and this is a world-class award and this is great recognition,” said Sandra MacDonald, general manager of the Destination Cape Breton Association. “It’s an award for something we know and we have right here in our own backyard, but don’t probably experience it as much as a visitor does or look at it through a visitor’s eyes.
“I think we need to stop and have a look and realize this is beauty at its best. We have wonderful people, wonderful music and wonderful opportunities for tourists.”
Cape Breton Island ranks 10th on the list of Top 10 islands overall in the world in this year’s survey and is the only Canadian island ranked in the Top 10. In 2006, Cape Breton was second on the list of the Top 5 Islands in the continental United States and Canada.
“We’ve known and loved the unique beauty of Cape Breton all our lives and with this high-profile ranking, more people from around the world will be drawn to experience its charms,” said Premier Rodney MacDonald. “It confirms that Nova Scotia is a top quality tourism destination that can compete with exotic locations around the world.”
Destination Cape Breton will use the designation to help market tourism said Sandra MacDonald, who also hopes Cape Bretoners are proud of their home.
“We hope we can have the opportunity to market,” she said. “This comes with a logo award and we will be in New York to accept the award in July. This readership is pretty broad and this is something we are certainly proud of and we should market and capitalize on.
“We should be proud of living on Cape Breton Island and having this in our own backyard to explore. I hope people get out there and enjoy what we have and are proud of it.”
The magazine invited subscribers to help rank islands, cities, hotels, car-rental agencies, airlines, tour companies and cruise lines. Readers rate islands based on natural attractions, activities/sights, restaurants/food, people and value.
The complete 2008 results, including the top 100 hotels worldwide, top 10 cities in the world and top 10 islands in the world is posted on www.travelandleisure.com/worldsbest and will be featured in Travel + Leisure’s August issue, available on newsstands July 22.
