Montserrat -- 180◦ overlooking the sea
On Runaway Point Circle, in Olveston, I own the largest tract of land available for residential building on the island of Montserrat. It consists of six adjoining lots on a hillside overlooking the sea, which extend from the top of the hill on Runaway Point to a line near the sea cliff at the bottom. It is a magnificent site.
Many years ago I purchased two lots on that hillside (#484 and #485) comprising what is now called Parcel 103. Intending to build our second home there, I subsequently purchased, after long discussions with the owner, two adjoining lots (#486 and #487) comprising what is now called Parcel 102. It was my serious intention to create a large winter estate; therefore, with some difficulty, I negotiated the eventual purchase of the adjoining lots (#483 and #482) comprising what is now called Parcel 104. These three parcels, in area totaling a little less than 3 acres, combine to cover the hillside, from the road on the north to the green ghaut (stream) to the south. They give a commanding view, 180▫ of the Caribbean Sea to the west, the lush valley, and the mountains to the east. There is nothing like it on that island.
From this land there is no sign of the volcano, which is very far away. Here we are in the verdant and very most beautiful part of what remains a genuinely emerald isle. Many years, and much labor, were needed to acquire this substantial property. I offer the whole of it for sale now, with great pride, for US$285,000. With a down payment of $85,000, I will finance the purchase by taking a note with standard interest on the unpaid balance.
Property tax on this land is modest. The location is perfect, with paved roads in this district of Olveston, solid infrastructure, and other superb villas situated nearby. Montserrat remains the crown of the Caribbean, and this extraordinary property on Runaway Point is the jewel in the crown.
I am a professor at the University of Michigan; I love to talk and write about Montserrat, and about my land there. Write me, please, at my home: 16 Ridgeway, Ann Arbor, Michigan, 48104 – or by email: ccohen@umich.edu.
