The Innchanter is a 90 foot long heritage vessel, moored on the west coast of Vancouver Island in beautiful Clayoquot Sound. For the past twelve years, it has been running as an exclusive retreat bed and breakfast , catering to kayakers , campers , and luxury minded adventurers.

Moored in the embracing arms of Hotsprings Cove, just 28 miles north of Tofino, the Innchanter has both an amazing tranquil setting, as well as direct links to the booming tourism industry of Tofino and the Pacific Rim National Park. Hotsprings Cove is connected to Tofino three times daily by local float plane, as well as nine boat tour companies that bring tourists throughout the day.

The vessel is a restored 1920’s coastal freighter that has been rebuilt as a floating bed and breakfast, staying true to the eras’ arts and crafts style. The circular stern salon features arched ceiling beams and inlaid stained glass windows opening up a 280 degree view of the local mountains and rocky shore line. The main dining salon has built in cabinetry, leather sofas and a wood-burning fireplace, while further forward, a cozy library continues the wood paneled warmth and provides either a quiet retreat, or a spare bedroom.

The ship has three levels, providing over 1700 sq. ft. of living space, as well as 700sq. ft. of open deck space on the top level for sun tanning and el fresco dining. The upper level has one suite of rooms and the sun decks, while the main deck level contains the library, dining salon, entry, head, galley, and circular stern salon. The lower deck consists of five guest rooms, a small sitting area and a second head as well as a wine cellar and storage room.

The Innchanter was rebuilt twelve years ago specifically to function as a bed and breakfast in Hotsprings Cove. While it is capable of moving to any location, it was refurbished to compliment the environment of Hotsprings Cove, and the clientele that frequent the area. As we as being sensitive to the environment visually, the ship also functions using solar power, rainwater collection and maserator toilets, to lower its’ ecological impact. While the ship does have diesel and gasoline back up generators, they are not needed during the busy summer months of business, and are for emergency and winter use, when the solar panels alone cannot supply enough power.
The galley onboard the Innchanter has been recently rebuilt and enlarged to include the former radio room and old galley style kitchen. This inviting centre of the boat now boasts stainless steel countertops, a new propane stove with broiler, a maple topped butcher block island with two seats for socializing, a built in display cupboard, as well as a new energy efficient 12 volt fridge. There is a walk in pantry, as well as new halogen lighting throughout.
The head has recently been updated with a new mahogany vanity and inset circular porcelain sink.

History:
The ship was built local in 1927 on the Frazer River at the Dawe shipyard in New Westminister, using clear old growth Douglas fir, in the caravel planked style. The Washington Inline 12 cylinder engine has long since been replaced and upgraded with a Detroit Deisel G.M.C V 12/71 turning a single 62 inch brass screw. While the interiors have been modified and updated, most of the old fittings and details remain, including the teak doors, window frames and brass hardware. All the new work has been carried out in a sympathetic style and seamlessly blended with the origional.

Business:
The Innchanter has been in business for twelve years, working in co-operation with several of the local tour companies, two airlines and the local water taxi service. It holds a unique position on the coast as the only floating bed and breakfast, as well as one of only two places to stay in Hotsprings Cove. The Innchanter was designed to compliment the existing businesses in the area and not to compete with them, either in style or services offered. The bed and breakfast has been written up in several guide books written about the area, as well as The Lonely Planet Guide to Canada. Numerous newspaper and magazine articles have also started to spread the word about this unique vacation getaway.
